Ninety Day Wonder is more a novel of warriors than of war. In its pages, we meet Gene Sinclair, a man with a plan – to become a medical doctor. World War II looms, Sinclair is drafted and trained for the coastal artillery. He wrangles himself a place in the pharmacy training program. Then the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, and the artillery takes him back, this time to attend the ninety-day Officer’s Training School and become an antiaircraft artillery officer. At the school, he meets Sarah Gale. Despite his resolve to avoid romantic relationships until he is an MD, he falls for her. Like so many of their generation, they are soon separated by war but promise to be faithful to one another.  His unit is shipped off to Australia, where the reality of war shakes up his world once more.
